The Purchase of Used Farm Equipment Should be Done Carefully

While it is often a good idea to purchase second hand instead of brand new from a dealer, there are times when a lemon can be sold when it comes to tractors, just like in the automotive business. There are many things that any farmer needs to be aware of before they decide to purchase a particular piece of equipment, especially if it is for sale by another farmer looking to get rid of some things he no longer needs.

There are often many different piece of used farm equipment for sale upon looking for a replacement piece of machinery. These reconditioned tractors and other farm equipment pieces can be found just about anywhere, including swap sheets, the classifieds, and even through online searches. If a farmer has found a potentially useful item that they are wishing to purchase, it is a good idea to make sure it is within a short enough distance that it can be taken a look at prior to the purchase. The overall inspection needs to be carefully done to make sure that the item in question still has several years of use left in it.

Several things should be checked before making the purchase of a second hand Allis Chalmers or a refurbished John Deere. The first thing to know is how many previous owners there have been as any farmer will know that it is better to have only a few owners to make sure that nothing harmful has been done to the equipment. Some farmers will make repairs themselves if need be, so it is important to know what has been repaired on the tractor. The used farm equipment should also be checked to see if the seals on the axles are still in satisfactory condition with many years of service left as this can be an expensive repair job. Engine repairs are also something that can occur frequently so it is a good idea to check on the condition it is in currently.

Upon checking for the number of hours that have been put on the tractor, a farmer will pretty much know exactly what type of condition the machinery is in. If all factors are considered, there should be many more hours of service left in the second hand piece of equipment.
